Last year, despite receiving an invitation to Disney on the Road, I couldn't attend and was left wanting to know exactly what it was all about. So this year, I firmly resolved to do my best to go, and I did. I took the train and headed to New York!
The first thing I thought was that the content would focus on social media topics and tips for those of us who have blogs, as well as information about the Disney park itself.
I was very surprised when I learned that the conference would focus on "Women in Business," a topic I am personally passionate about.
The event was hosted by Maria Bailey of Mom Talk Radio, who, incidentally, inspires me to try my hand at vlogging every time I listen to her. I hope to do so soon.
Returning to the topic of the event, one of the speakers was Jenn Labit who is the founder of Cotton Babies, She is an example of what a woman with vision and passion for business can do to achieve success.
Jenn started her cloth diaper business with just a $100 investment. She began by stocking her products at home, and her business grew so rapidly that today they have a warehouse where they distribute their products. Jenn Labit is a mother, wife, and businesswoman. How does she do it? By completely focusing on her goals and always seeing opportunities to improve. One of Jenn's quotes that stuck with most attendees was "if you're not prepared to fail, you're not prepared to win"—words of wisdom.
A panel of entrepreneurial moms then filled the room with inspiring stories of business success. All of them embarked on the adventure of bringing their product ideas to life and successfully launching them on the market.
I'm always amazed when a new product comes onto the market that's both useful and good. There's definitely so much more to invent, and these women demonstrated during this conference that moms and women in general are very skilled at recognizing and seeing the needs of certain useful products for the family and the home. However, not all of us have an idea in mind to patent, and there are many other options for starting a business, such as providing services or retailing. As I told Maria Bailey, although my business is distributing materials created by others, what I heard at Disney on the Road was very useful for me. It was knowing that there's always a way to get ahead, working from home, being a mom and entrepreneur at the same time, and knowing that there are many like me. It's always good to give ourselves that pat on the back and listen to the stories of others who help us generate ideas and apply them.
We then heard from Michelle Stepney (Disney's Public Relations Content Director) who talked about how to be prepared for a close-up, or rather, how to introduce yourself. Michelle was very engaging in her presentation and even made everyone laugh by showing the video of the interview with the wrong person, as an example of the confidence we should always demonstrate during our interviews or professional conversations.
This video is about a person who went to a TV set for a job interview but was mistaken for an online music expert and ended up being interviewed. However, as you'll see in the video, he emerged from the interview with flying colors precisely because of his confident knowledge of the subject.
It was a very enriching morning and a great opportunity to learn, make friends, and meet new people. Thank you, Disney!
