Christmas Gingerbread Houses at Peddler's Village

Christmas brings with it many traditions around the world. Here in the United States, making gingerbread houses is one of them, as it is in many European countries.

According to the portal of pbs.orgThe origin of these little houses comes from Germany during the 16th century, and their popularity is even attributed to the story of Hansel and Gretel. Who doesn't remember the candy-covered house they found while lost? It definitely resembles a Christmas gingerbread house, but it's not certain that their popularity is due to the story of this classic tale.

Common gingerbread house assembled at home with purchased parts.

Here in the United States, during the weeks leading up to Christmas, stores offer all kinds of sets for building and decorating these houses. These are assembled with pre-made gingerbread cookies, glued with sugar, and decorated with plenty of candy and sweets. Once the house is finished, it's ready to be eaten if you wish.

Although buying them isn't always an option, many choose to make the cookies and do everything at home, depending on the purpose and time. Without a doubt, for some families, it's a great way to spend an unforgettable time, creating traditions and memories. And if you can't make them or don't have enough time, you can add visiting one of the exhibitions and/or competitions organized in various locations to your seasonal activities.

One such place here in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is the Gingerbread Competition and Display. Peddler's VillageAn annual Christmas event held since 1984, individuals or groups organize to compete in categories such as “Authentic Reproduction from Around the World,” “Incredible and Unusual 3-D Creation,” “Reproduction from a Movie or TV Set,” “Santa Wonderland,” “Student Creation,” and “Kids-Only Creation.”

Each year, the creations definitely demonstrate a great deal of creativity and effort. We're sharing just a few of these incredible works from 2022.

If you're interested in visiting Peddlers Village, this exhibit will be open until January 8, 2023.
