With the arrival of summer vacation, family-friendly activities also begin. There's so much to see, visit, and learn in Philly. And since tourism is very limited during the winter, we're taking advantage of this summer to share with everyone what there is to see and do in Philly.
Last week we visited The Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was our first visit, and I was a little worried that my children wouldn't enjoy art as much as I do, as an adult now able to appreciate the magnificent exhibitions this museum offers. However, I was completely wrong. They thoroughly enjoyed this visit because we were able to see a preview of the program this museum will offer this summer for the entire family, but especially for the little ones.
ART SPLASH
This is the name of the program, which will begin on June 28th and will include five extraordinary exhibitions of illustration, fashion, drawing, photography, and design. Each exhibition includes interactive games, art-related hands-on activities, and special events for the whole family!

All Dressed Up for children and their families
The clothing worn from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. Here, children can play fashion designers and even display their drawings and/or creations. Super fun! Of course, my rebellious children designed Mario Bros.'s outfit, but guess what? There's something for them too, as I'll mention below.
Candy Coated Wonderland
Artist Candy Coated, also known as Candy Depew, presents her modern and playful designs using children's costumes from the museum. The artist uses decals, silk fabrics, ceramic wall jewelry, and other materials. She showcases the elaborate attire of characters from children's stories and poetry.
Other exhibitions include:
Witness: The art of Jerry Pinker
A look back at the five decades of work of this Philadelphia-born illustrator. More than one hundred images, including album cover designs, watercolors, and pencil drawings that reflect African American history, as well as the award-winning books featuring his illustrations.
Design for the Modern Child
An exhibition of seventy years of international toy, furniture, and other object designs. This is where my children's designs fit in.
Family Portrait
A sample of the many ways photographers portrayed families.
ACTIVITIES as part of Art Splash
After visiting the exhibits, children are invited to design or draw their own creations based on what they saw during their visit.
This is where my children let their imaginations run wild, but the oldest insisted on focusing his art on Mario Bros. 🙂
This museum is located at 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy Philadelphia and the exhibition hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free for children under 12 years old and adults pay $10.
If you want more information about the programs you can visit the website of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Disclosure: This post has not been financially compensated; I was invited by the museum to personally see the exhibitions they will be offering this summer.
