How many phases does the moon have? Why are spacesuits so thick? How is time measured in space?
The questions are many, everything our children and we ourselves would like to know about the astronauts' mission, from their training to how they live and what they do once they reach space, how they see Earth from the International Space Station, and what they study on the moon. Reading this book transports us to that place, to space, and makes us part of Max's adventures.
Max is the main character of the story. He is a privileged dog who is chosen to travel first to space and then to the moon, accompanied by his inseparable owner Tori. However, traveling outside of Earth is not so simple for Max, who has to go through a series of training sessions to finally reach space (Max Reaches Space) and then to the moon (Max Reaches the Moon).
Max's story, in addition to being entertaining, includes a separate explanation of the theme being developed on each page, making this series of books very rich in educational and informative content. For example, when Max, once in space, doesn't feel his weight, which makes him feel very uncomfortable, the author explains why gravity isn't felt in space, and the same format is used throughout the series. There are three titles available in English and Spanish. The one I reviewed is the Spanish version, and I can say that I was impressed by how perfectly translated it is; there are no errors that could confuse the reader.
Author Jeffrey Bennett is an astrophysicist who worked for NASA, as well as a professor and writer. You can find out about his other works on his personal website, jeffreybennett.com.
How about listening to a story narrated by an astronaut? Yes! Straight from space!
There are five books by Jeffrey Bennet, which have already been sent into space to be read by astronauts, the stories of Max and other titles can be listened to by family or in schools from the website storytimefromspace.com.
However, this developing project needs everyone's help. Funding is needed to edit the remaining videos and expand the Story Time From Space website's digital library. Experiments will also be sent to astronauts in space for them to develop and record. These experiments will be accompanied by a series of books that meet the curriculum required in schools. As you can see, this is a complete scientific project, suitable for fostering our children's interest in science. To help make this project a reality, you can donate or share the link. Kickstarter.
