Thanksgiving, as it is known in English, is the day celebrated every year in the United States on the last Thursday of November. It is also celebrated in some European countries and in Canada, but in the latter, it is celebrated on the second Monday of October.
It is said that this celebration originated when pilgrims arriving from Europe learned to survive in these lands thanks to the Native Americans, who taught them how to grow corn, cereals, pumpkins, and other crops. Thanks to this, they held a grand dinner in gratitude, which they called the Great Thanksgiving Feast. However, there are other versions of the first dinner, as this one has not been confirmed, but it is the most commonly used in schools.
Returning to the last Thursday of November, it is a very special day for us because it allows us to reflect and give thanks for all the good, and even the bad, things that have happened to us throughout the year and throughout our lives.
And what about the menu?
We make it American style, since for my husband it wouldn't be Thanksgiving otherwise, although sometimes we incorporate some of our Latin cuisine.
The traditional American dinner consists of:
- Roast Turkey (some fry it)
- Cranberry sauce
- Green bean casserole with mushroom sauce
- Pineapple pudding
- Mashed potatoes
- Stuffing (we know it as stuffing bread)
- Baked sweet potatoes, some prepare them with marshmallows.
- and the inevitable pumpkin pie, apple pie or cheesecake...
And what is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
